I pulled my engine from bessy 2 weeks ago,it was always pretty lean up top this season and could never figure out why,I also could not give it timing at all,it would only run decent at 0 degrees or lower intitial,I got it to run ok and figured I would be nice until winter,I beat on it the last day out and did this!
I found after removing the heads toi see if there was more damage and there is not,I did however find the balancer spun about 1 1/2 inches!! That explains the timing thing,I will have a better balancer on the new engine.

Anytime you are having wonky timing issues like that, suspect a slipped harmonic balancer immediately....

and ....
Better have a harmonic balancer installation tool to put the new one one. Hammering it onto the crank will cause no end of misery later....

Fine, thank god,I just got the dart heads in the spring,I am glad I did not really beat on the boat the last half of summer, now I also know why it was so slow.

I know small block fords are known for the balancer slipping like that,I did not know chevy had the same issues,I totally overlooked that being the problem!!

I have the tool.
