Im looking for a small 150A ish mig to keep around the house for welding small "around the house" stuff. I dont want anything much bigger becase I already have large welders at work. Who gives you the best bang for your buck theese days? Miller? Licoln? Hobart? other suggestions?

Just curious. I have no love for mig and I either arc (stick) or heli-arc everything. Wouldnt a small buzz box and some rod do just fine. Ive used mig and consider it more a production tool than a once in a while thing. I guess its what you are used to.

Im not a huge fan of stick when it comes to small and fine stuff.

Yea, it takes a touch for sure, thats why I switch to TIG at that point. I have always considered MIG not much better than caulk. Like I said, it depends on what you are used to. I had to run an aluminum MIG for a few jobs and hated it so bad. You really have to move with that puppy. Trying to weld around 1" stantions was a *****.

<cough> I need bolster bottoms... <cough> :D

I thought about making my bolsters longer and then shortening the stands. I think this is a good excuse for Tony to buy a welder.

For starters I suck at welding, I started with a HUGE and OLD gas powered Hobart and was thrown into one of those emergency sink or swim situations at work. I swam but barely. Today I can stick weld but it aint pretty but it will hold up to anything short of a baghouse explosion. :D

I picked up the gun for a mig for the first time last winter and instantly fell in love, not only where my welds strong but now they looked good too.

As I said before this is gonna be basic at home stuff with some very light and thin project work. Tig is way more than I need. I have access to just about any type of welder imaginable if the need arises with skilled people who work for beer :D

Or Absolut. Ask Bob about some stuff I TIGed for him.. If you are good with a mig, all the better.

We have a small Lincoln mig at work that we have been beating on for the last three years just waiting for it to die and it won't. We get it so hot that it shuts down, wait two minutes and start again for 30 more minutes. The thing won't die!

It's about a 500 unit.

Thrill, if you are serious about buying a decent one, our buddy that works @ the place that restores $5,000,000 cars has a sweet hookup with a distributor that will sell him rfurbs, demos, etc.
PM or call me...
