Best deer hunting tip ever:
Don't use a gun.
Just drive around Ohio anywhere in the country and you will run ove rone in short order.
Driving back from Milwaukee (finally out of that ****hole) last night I had to dodge 3 of the **** things.

now that Im a piss poor homeowner Im thinkin about fillin the freezer the cheap way.

a $ 1.00 slug is a lot cheaper than a tank of gas plus the body shop bill for replacing the grill and bumper on the truck.:D

Maybe try bow hunting. It starts the first week of October when it's a bit warmer.

We hunt (3rd favorite hobby) at Clendening Lake.

We go to the hunting area by boat (2nd favorite hobby), so the drag is always down hill:Cheers:

That's too far for a bow shot. I shot a deer at about 15 yards out of a tree stand. I could see it like slow motion. It looked like a perfect through and through shot, but I never did find the deer. I think I hit it a little farther back than I thought. Spent half the night looking for it, and all the next morning. It left a bad taste in my mouth, so I have never have bow hunted since.

General gun season opens here today.

Last weekend I went hog hunting on some private land Debbie's daddy is caretaker for. Her nephew got this big sow, the biggest sow I ever saw. The next evening, I missed the biggest hog I ever saw, and it was only ten yards away from me, but I had fallen asleep leaning against a tree, and was still half groggy when the big sob walked up from the wrong direction. I was facing the swamp, because I'd seen all the hog tracks coming from the swamp after I'd hunted that exact same spot the evening before. Well, this guy was apparently still up on the high ground behind me. He saw me at the same time I saw him. I didn't have time to pull the hammer back, because it's a hair trigger in single action, but the double action pull is much stronger. He didn't run straight to the swamp like he should have, he ran kind of a zig zag course directly off my left shoulder, and I took three broadside shots at him. I never saw him stagger, but I couldn't believe I missed all three shots. A big hog can carry off a lot of lead, but he should have at least stumbled. It was almost dark, so I jumped up and headed towards where I last saw him, hoping to find him flopping on the ground, so I could administer the coup de gras on him. Debbie heard me shoot, and rode up on her four wheeler. I hollered at her to look for my coke can by the tree I was sitting next to, and turn the lights on, so I'd have a point of reference where I shot from. It gets dark in a hurry in the swamp. She and I looked for quite a while and never saw any blood. I guess I must have missed him. I had never, ever had to take a second shot with that pistol (Colt Anaconda 8" 44 Mag). Up until that point, I had the sniper rating with that pistol: One shot, One Kill. :(

Totally agree with the out of range comment. It's stupid shots like the one I took that mame a deer. I never went again.

Bring that bird dog down. At our age, quail are a lot easier to haul out of the woods. :)

I wish we had pheasant down here. When I lived in Oregon, there was a field behind our house that pheasant would be in. I wasn't hunting, but I'd walk out there, and those pheasant wouldn't flush until you almost stepped on them. Skeered the crap out of me when they'd take off. I'd have probably dropped my shotgun anyway.

Right now Debbie's dad has five bird dogs down on that property by the Suwannee. I heard there are two more coming for hunting season. I love taking my lab when we go bird hunting. She won't point, but you can tell when she smells a quail, she gets what I call "birdy". You gotta be ready, because she won't point. :) She'll **** sure bring the bird back though. She also real helpful when dove hunting. She'll see about where they drop, and she can find them much better than I can. I've been wanting to take her duck hunting, but I haven't seen a dang duck during hunting season for several years lately. :(

When we took the boat down to the ramp today, there were two boats of hunters with dogs. One guy even had a dog box mounted on his boat. You could tell it was the beginning of gun season. You're allowed to run dogs in most areas of the Ocala National Forest, which is just across the river from that boat ramp, and runs about 15 miles north. They beach their boats, then try to find deer to run. I asked one guy if they ran anything today. He said they jumped three bucks, but never got a shot at them. Most of the time, dog hunters spend all day chasing does, and trying to catch up their dogs. We were in a dog hunt club several years ago, it's just not my style. It was fun, but more of a social event, with hunters bringing their wives and children, and when they hear the dogs jump, fly down the dirt roads tearing the chit out of their trucks.

Hell, up here if your dog, coon/rabbit/bird even sticks its nose in a deer track you give'em a good ole correction unless you wanna chase it all night/day or worse never see it again.

I hunted beagles for years and came close to loosing one to a deer track....never again....

Funny I was just thinking today that I might call one of my hunting buddys from a few years back. Living down south and being too busy has kept me out of the woods for a few years but I have been a little bored and maybe sitting in the woods in a week or so might be fun. I will have to see if I can find my ****. I know where the the guns are I sold the bow and crossbow but I need to find my clothes!

Kill'em and grill'em

I just put 70 lbs of boned out deer meat in my freezer. I was also given another 50lbs of Antelope.........TASTY.....

$24.00 for 70 lbs of meat... under $0.35 per lb........thats Cheap.

Plus I have 28 geese in my freezer that I killed in Canada earlier this year.

Almost have a full freezer for winter. I need to kill one more deer and some ducks and I will have good eats all winter.

Come to my house on the river they land out front every night....... I haven't shot any in ohio becuase I so many in my freezer already.

I like to shoot them just to watch my lab retrieve. He goes nuts anytime I have a gun out or pick up camo clothing.

I dont think I could draw a bow right now still working on getting my strength back and after going for a short hike through the woods Saturday morning I think I better pass this year up and not do something foolish. I will concentrate on getting healthy and maybe by muzzell loader season I will feel a little stronger and stable on my feet.

Our general gun started two weeks ago, but I didn't have any permits for the WMA's, which you need for the first nine days, so Monday was the first day I could hunt on public land. I need to go buy my Management stamp first.

1.5 miles from me is the Ocala National Forest, which is a WMA, and it's 330,000 acres to play in. About eight miles west of me is Tiger Bay WMA, which I think is 28,000 acres, and about 12 miles north of me is Lake George WMA, I don't know how big it is, it's kind of split up. I saw some big hog sign there last year. That's what I like to hunt. dam n a bunch of deer...............unless it's a trophy of course. :) I don't even like venison.

I can eat just about any game as long as it is cooked with some fatty pork or beef to help the lean. Or tomato based to kill the gamey taste. Better yet...BOTH.

Chili....very good cause it doesn't care what the meat is.

how long does gun season last in Fl?

Ohio's only last a week and it usually brings all the whack jobs out of the woodwork  The main reason I stopped gun hunting years ago and went to bow was becase of all the idiots that would blast away at anything that moved.

This is the one that ended my season this year. I will not be getting this one mounted because of the broken left main beam and the ground shrinkage that it contracted before I could get to it. KN

Nice, I saw quite a few running deer within range this past week ( I dont shoot at running deer) most of the other locals I talked to said that due to the unseasonably warm temps. for most of the week, the deer just were not moving. For some reason Ohio tacked on an extra 2 days of open season that will be happening the 16th. and 17th of this month.

It depends on which section of Florida you are in. Most of the state the gun season starts on the first Saturday in November, and runs until mid January. The northwest season starts later, but runs longer, and then has two weeks of black powder after that. I remember one year hunting bp during March.
