I may just have to change my name to TEAMSEASWIRL. Bought this gem last night.

1991 Seaswirl 190 Sierra Classic
5.0 OMC Cobra
At least 4 cupholders (these will be upgraded)
Stabbin Cabbin
Minimal paint on outdrive

I bought it to clean up and resell, but I may just dump it in to party at anchors away, and a place to crash at night. Maybe run it over and pick up BAJALION and cruise the channels!:cool1:

Well, she's an ugly little turd but I find you have the most fun on boats like this. One season with the Red Rocket led to endless stories, just ask Tony. He named the Rocket by the way!:D

Never bough a nice boat as of late. I just mess with them too much so I'd rather start with a POS.

BTW...seaswirl makes a pretty good boat. Not real popular here...mostly on the West coast.

I think they are made in Oregon maybe?

I rubbed a little on the deck, it should come out nice. The hull will clean up a little, but it will be far from perfect. If it floats and runs it definately Kelleys Island material, as long as the waves are 10' or less!:)

The Captain Queeg bowrail really sets it off. I had a 20 foot Formula with the Queeg option, before I took it off. Unless you plan on leaning on it while harpooning whales.:p

The "harpooning of whales" takes place inside the cabin, take the bow rail off, it will be one more thing for casper to trip on while tryong to squak to the next boat.

When that drive fails or needed any kind of repair whatsoever, I'd swap it out to a Merc in a heartbeat and sell the 800 Cobra OMC leftovers on ebay.

The hybrid Volvo/OMC drive didn't enter the market until after the "joint venture" (that term is not at all accurate to describe what really occured, but OMC loyalists still swear by it) of OMC and Volvo in 1993....Cobra drives prior to that used either the 400 (small lower gear case) or 800 (large lower gear case), both of wich are legacy components from the old Stringer Drive, and used a clutch dog.
The Hybrid Volvo-OMC drive used the Volvo designed cone clutch.

Personal opinion: The death of OMC goes back to the introduction of the Cobra and the original disasterous shift cable that destroyed lower units left and right. The warranty costs to OMC were huge, but not as painful as the complete lack of confidence the public came to have in Cobra drives. The new shift cable was way too late to restore faith in the product.

The idiots at OMC REALLY f'ed up when they refused an offer by Penske to aquire the company.....Roger Penske had a long history of turning around decripit companies with huge infusions of cash and engineering (Detroit Diesel or Allison for example), but the fools at OMC would hav eno part of it,thus setting themselves up for eventual death.

Sidewinder

This drive does not look anything like an 800, it looks like the newer drive.

Sadly yes, OMC shot themselves in the foot on the cable deal, then shot themselves in the other foot with the Penske thing, and shot themselves a few other places with the outboard crap they tried.

I take it then the boat had the conversion done and is now an SX...

If the Penske deal had went forward the drive business today would be much different....Volvo wouldn't even be in the US market, the screwing Yamaha gave boat owners with their failed outdrive entry would not have happened, and the market would most likely be at least 50/50 OMC/Merc.

As for FICHT's...that disaster is a whole 'nother can of worms.

Here I found one on eBay, this is what TB's drive would look like if it had paint on it.

This does not look like the 800 that I've seen before. But I am new to this motor stuff, I was researching these when a guy wanted to trade me one for some parts I had.

Ok, here is pic of the SX, I do like it better. Looks like an easy swap if the original goes bad. And because OMC's got such a bad rap, that does help keep the prices down.

Much more cost effective to just do the swap to the Merc....same transom cut out, you can buy a brand spanking NEW Alpha outdrive (upper and lower) for $1,000 w/ a warranty.

Check the cost of the conversion kit to an SX.......$$$$

Having it on the boat does hurt the resale value a bit, 'cause of the OMC thing. But I'd run it.

I am in no way saying it's a bad drive, in fact you can usually get a bargain on a boat if it has an OMC product on it, so that can be quite a positive factor.
You just have to keep in mind that for some applications there are NO PARTS AVAILABLE AT ALL (like a 460 coupler for example), and some of the available parts are pretty outrageous.
A Lower Unit gearset will run about $1K alone.

Bomar76

No...upper and lower only.

To convert to an SX you need:

Part Number: 3857377
Description: TRANSOM SHIELD (Volvo Penta)
Price: $ 627.79
Retail Price: $ 697.54

Part Number: 3857384
Description: WATER PUMP KIT (Volvo Penta)
Price: $ 306.52
Retail Price: $ 340.58

Part Number: 3868892
Description: RPL3869337 (Volvo Penta)
Price: $ 4956.00
Retail Price: $ 5900.00

So you are looking at least $6k to do the swap.

To be quite honest, I dont know a **** thing about OMC. I have zero experience with them. Engine and drive werent even a factor when I bought this POS. Just wanted a cheap fixer upper, either to use as a place to sleep, or resell.

Esay way to tell when the cable needs adjustment:
When you lose Forward, you should of had it done, 'cause it's now too late.

Everytime something like that happens to me, I seem to be in a bad spot. Once in the rocket in the channel on a busy day, no forward, no reverse, and once in a 26 Outlaw when I spun a hub in the channel. Someone had put one of those cheap plastic ones in there (I would like to think I didnt do it! )

The bad deal is with a Merc it's a broken shift cable (cheap), on a Cobra it's a gear set (over $1K for parts).

Hey, if you ever need a loaner prop, I have a 23 that slips like hell over 2,000 RPM!
Glad to let you use it if you ever need it!
