I was hoping it was a double wide with a tip out.....

anyway, not a bad deal for that trailer if you have a way to get rid of the Checkmate that is on it!

TB- Did Baja ever do business with C-Hawk? I know they were not geared up for major production but they make a very nice steel trailer. I think the new owners (friend's of the Kunkels) even stepped up the quality and options a notch over Otis.

If I had a few extra bucks I'd run down and get that trailer. Push the BAJA off it and put something else on it.

SUFFER that purple boat over to my place. I can move some of the other 'mates around to make some room for it.

Not sure why Checkmate gets ragged on. They really are extremely well built (if not overbuilt) boats.

I hardly ever hear of anyone ragging on Checkmate. There are always the jokes about the company itself and not doing much in the past few years, but I dont really hear anything negative towards the boats. I am convinced the place will make a big comeback (IMO).

No serious. My buddy's 30' 1987 is an unbeliveably well built boat. Looks spectacular and has about 700 hours on it (not just putting either). All original.

Can standard with offshore stringer and mounts. The glasswork is fabulous.

While the "company" might not be on top of their game in the last few yrs, Checkmate still makes an awsome boat.

One thing that is not commonly known is that the company has been building boats from pretty much the beginning of the performance boating industry. They have been in continuous operation since 1962 (44+ yrs) and owned by the same group of local guys. (I personally can not think of one other boating company that has a similiar record.) They have spawned off several other boat companies (Panther, Fantasy, soon to be "Reality"etc) and even helped w/ the start up of Baja Marine and Concord.

The company still holds many APBA, GLOBRA, and OPC wins and titles. The two biggest racing highlights being a 1978 Havasu Classic V hull win (Combs/ Ben Robertson) and producing a Mercury Factory Racing Team member, Mike Downard (teammates w/ Fountian, Seebold, etc).

I would estimate the company has built over 10,000+ boats from 11' to 33'. The company/primary partner has always did their own "thing" in the boating market, but they still produce some of the best mold/ gel work and some of the fastest hulls in the industry (ask the Kunkels). While the company has been very quiet and under funded the last few yrs, you must remember the remaining 3 partners are in their mid 60s and 70s. So it's hard to compare a small privately held company to the other boat company in Bucyrus that is owned by a parent company w/ vast resources and money.

Have a nice Holiday-

They take a lot of power to get them to run those numbers.

Does anyone remember when Jack Brown ripped his motor mount out of the stringers on Erie? LMAO. That boat was cursed.

No, it deffinatley was P. E. Time and time again. On lake erie one day, running hard, all of a sudden there is a new banging noise. Not of an engine coming apart. Slow down to idle, leave engine running. He opens the hatch to find the engine laying on its side. So the best option was to cruise at a reasonable speed back into the marina. Boat had a few hundred hours at that time. Tore the lags right out.

He broke **** that was un-breakable over and over.

Lags dont sound like a good idea. The old 190 has lags in it!

How did you end up changing it?

tmmiibaja

I don't think I have a picture.... But...

Got rid of the V6 motor mounts (with the extra rubber, super tall ones) and mounted the new stock V8 mounts on Aluminum L brackets and through bolted the L bracket to the stringer. I wanted to put a true offshore motor mount in, but these stringers are too close together. I may make something up similar, but who knows, it isnt on the top of the list now.

Formula and Donzi come to mind. I think Formula started building boats in 1963 or so, and Donzi about two years later. They have been in continous operation, although not with the same original owner, especially since said original owner has been taking a dirt nap for the past twenty years. :(

I like Checkmate boats for the most part, although I have found some things on Donzis boat that will make you say WTF out loud.

My only question is: Whats with the white Eldorado that sits outside of the factory 24/7 ?
