View Full Version : Fountain: Questioning the Beak

I have a question about the beak on a Fountain. To me, it seems the beak would be wasted space in the cuddy. Is there access to the beak to use as storage for things like extra oars, or fishing poles?

No bashing here, this is an honest thread! :D

I believe it's wasted space and add's a little over all length.

Space for a small safe for the gold chain collection maybe? :D :D

The fountain beak is a mysterious and deceptive apparition. I've been studying and analyzing different boats lately, fountain being one of them, and have run a few computation fluid dynamics analysis. The beak actually has a very important purpose on Reginald's boats. It contributes quite appreciably to bow lift and eliminates a high-drag, high pressure zone found on most "blunt-nosed" boats, it also streamlines and begins separating the airflow between the hull sides and deck, somewhat alleviating the typical dual-conic vortex trailing "drag bucket" found on most vees.

The additional bowlift also reduces the amount of trim necessary to carry the boat at a level attitude at high speeds, which allows for the thrust to be directed more directly with the direction of travel further reducing drag.

Summarily, chopping the beak off a Fountain would result in loss of speed and handling.

In my professional opinion, the beak can categorically be considered a lifting device - which is explicitly prohibited by most racing sanctioning bodies - ask Fabio Buzzi.

I am surprised Reginald doesn't have tailfins on his boats, a la 1958 Plymouth "for aerodynamic effect"

Seems that acording to Nick old Reggie was way ahead of his time when he designed the "Beak" back then he had no access to the technology that Nick has today.
I am sure he did it back then just because it made them look fast!

I love the look of the 42 and 47 IMO all the rest remind me of an inflated condom. Cabins are tiny, same flat dash pannel on every one, same steering wheel that came off of the OFFROAD arcade game, lack of cup holders, oh yeah and the left handed throttoles  I hate the look of Mcleod interior, they seem to be a fast boat but from what I have seen dont last long in rough water, and the re sale value sucks. Definately not a boat for me.

That cracks me up everytime you say that about the steering wheel off the OFFROAD Arcade game. Mostly because its true.

The left handed throttles are the worst thing IMO. I know alot of people dont like the setup on our 30 and 35 Outlaw(some claim to hate it), but after getting used to the shifters on the left (throttles on the right), you probably wouldnt want it any other way. I think there is less chance of those "panic" errors in docking situations having the shifters and throttles seperate.

Baja Lion, your boats hull and super deep drives make it a lot more conservative than a stepped hull and notched transom.

I dont like the 24/27/29's. They are small and look goofy. No room any where. Freeboard between the 29 and 272 Baja is pretty close, as is the 420 Baja and 42 Lightning....

Get some seat time in one and you will like the left hand throttles. Most people are right handed, are you saying you want your weak hand on the wheel?

Whats next? Lamborghini/Porsche/Ferrari suck because they dont have a back seat like a conversion van......

Get into one with someone who truly knows how to drive one, then come back and say they suck. Get into one with Martin Sanborne and watch how he uses the tabs and how most owners use them.

bajalion
12-27-2006, 01:41 AM
Not trying to get into it with anyone but is it what ever you want.

I want a safe boat with lots of room for a reasonable cost. As most here know I'm about bang for the buck. I personally believe that there is more to a fountain name than the performance for the price.

Regarding layout my boat is set up for my ergonomics not somebody elses. I do not race, have full power hyd steering, therefore I like my touch controls on the right. I've had 10 people on my boat before with relative comfort (they fit)

Regarding the exotic car comment. I've head this before. Are you going off roading with a porsche cayenne? I wish luck to the 32' fountain to keep up with my boat with the same HP in 4' plus waves. These seem to be the norm around the lakes these days on the weekend.

I don't disagree with you first statment but then with the cars wouldn't you want the shifter on the left so you can steer with your right as well?

Plus who needs to steer ..........I WANNA GO FAST.

It all goes down to what the general public wants. How many have actually driven that way a few times? Very few.

Show me a somewhat affordable right hand drive car in the states.

The last person I knew who had one paid 90k.

I have put a fair amount of time in right seat time in some airplanes. I must say it's a bit unnerving having the trottle/mixture/prop pitch/flaps and trim on your left to begin with but you do get used to it.

The right/left thing is WAY overrated.

I had steering and throttle on the port side of my little Checkmate. I wasnt really fond of it, but it was ok for that boat.

I agree. You can get used to driving pretty much anything. One of our old boats had a foot pedal instead of a throttle
