All agencies are supposed to concentrate on pulling boaters over and check for drinking. FYI

They did the same thing last year. Not quite as big though.
Its easy to avoid: don't drink. Or if your going to be piss drunk, don't be the first three boats to your destination. They can only check so many people at a time.

would have thought that was last weekend with the 50 coast guard storm troopers on the docks at p.i.b... im all about safety and law enforcement however last weekends show of force was a bit excessive even for my taste and i dont drink if i have to drive home. saw them give a guy a ticket for a few ounces of oil in his bilge.

If you read the tag for officers you'll see its mandatory stops. ODNR, port clinton police, coast guard, and Boarder patrol are supposed to have mandatory stops. Even list how they want it to go, meaning five boats are the most to be stopped consectively then alter every third if get backed up etc... They have zero tolerance and are supposed to record if alcohol is on board, passengers, etc. It's to collect data to create percentages.
So just understand you can do everything right and still be pulled over, and they will give you a ticket. A BUI conviction results in loss of your drivers license and loss of OH numbers for your boat for one year. Also three beers in one hour and you'll blow .08 after three beers in one hour you reach a saturation point and even one beer an hour will keep you over the legal limit.

Thanks for the heads up.
Unless they have changed the law (ORC) in the last year you WILL NOT loose your car drivers license. You will loose your boat registration and ability to drive a boat for one year.
DO NOT TAKE THE TEST if you think your are close.
FormulaOne
06-12-2009, 01:13 AM
I had the unfortunate opportunity to watch the coast guard give someone a drunk test early this season. Said individual refused the breathalizer which in the case of an automobile would be an automatic suspension. The coast guard specifically said that this would have no effect on his driving record or liscense.
Either you got some bad info or more likely, different agencies reporting different versions of their interpretation of the law.
Regardless I'd say the best option is to not drink if youre driving your boat that weekend. Get to where you are going, tie up then get piss drunk and bang skanks.

If theese guys are that fuking concerned about safety (yawn) then implement a mandatory once a year vessel inspection and require proof of inspection in order to purchase anual registration stickers.
I have my sticker, I passed the inspection, DO NOT stop me on the water without probable cause. Were stopping you at 1 A.M. to give you a courtesy inspection..blow smoke up some one elses azz.

I have recieved three inspections this year. ODNR, Coast Guard, and Port Clinton Police. I have the pink copy of each stop and it shows I had no deficiencies. They were all nice to deal with. At this point the next safety inspection I'm going to just show them the three tickes that show I was good, and my 2009 stickers. I would hope a fourth is not needed. I like meeting the officers anyways.

I dont mind meeting all the local enforcement officers as long as they are polite and cordial and not trying to beat a confession out of a dead horse and make all sorts of threats about "what they can do, and what I cant do". I am always polite and cooperative with any sort of LE that I encounter, remember, they do have the gun and the badge. I generally make a comment on understanding the mindset as I have several friends and family members who work for various LE departments. I cant say enough good things about the Coast Guard team at Marblehead. The night we met them they were on top of their game.

In your case I would venture to say its out of the curiosity of these guys wanting to look at your boat. When my friend Jason was doing the poker run tour for Baja, he got pulled over once on the highway towing the boat and the cop immediately apologized and said he just wanted to look at the boat. I got stopped on the water quite often on the weekdays. Several times they didnt even ask about safety gear or #s, they'd just wanna bullsh*t for a few minutes and ask what power the boats had. I think they just get bored.

I guess my view of water officers has changed to very negative over the years with my personal and friends dealings with then especially ODNR. I have not had a problem with USCG.
I had a nice talk with a retired State Patrol who I know here in the park. We covered a lot of bases and senarios. We agreed on a lot of points and disagreed on a few. Base points we agreed on was the importance of professionalism and courtesy by officers and reciprocation by the citizen. The other was certain agencies lack of training and professionalism and the trend for younger cops not to be professional.

The p.c.p.d. Boarding has got to be a great story. Their boat is still down from a blown engine last season. I can imagine them trying to flag you down with flashlights

I heard that you can fight a boating BUI/DUI not to affect your license, due to that you don't need a license to drive a boat.
Not sure how true this is but would love to know.

With all the comandos out this weekend, I plan on not boating or very little. I always have a sober driver but thing is I have had an officer board my boat before and as his boot hit my tigers back bench seat it wripped the seat. I choose not to have the aggrevation.
I hope you guys understand but after damage on my last boat I really don't want the hastle.

I sometimes wonder if the cost to the taxpayer is worth it then I recall that we have been fortunate that with the exception of a few isolated incidents we've been pretty lucky around this area. I still hate forfeiting my right not to be hassled on the water. I also think that the water cops should be required to have a maritime background... Some of them sound pretty stupid when they're scolding ya

We have always and will always put a rug down before they board our boat. We have asked them if they would mind waiting until we brought a rug or something out to protect the seat. They have never objected.

I had no problem informing Yuingling that before he boarded my boat he was either going to take his shoes off, or wait for me to put towels down. He patiently waited for me to get out the towels.
I think some of theese LEOs realize that gun or no gun, stomping across the upholstry of an an expensive boat might just merrit an azz beating.

Noise is a whole other animal. There is an exact testing procedure that has to be followed and most of the time the environemental conditions along with the location of the stop do not comply with the test procedures.
Then if you really want to see a blank stare...... soooo officer, when was the last time your DB meter was calibrated.

Noise won't be a problem... Officers have to be specifically trained, and in the long run they know the requirements are to strict to really ever get a conviction.
baja power
06-23-2009, 08:24 PM
There are also strict laws regarding operating autos with Historical tags and and not showing plates that no cop in Ohio knows about. Quote the ORC and get a blank stare..
I realize the chance of actually getting a ticket are low, but my time is better spent then dealing with officer tweedle-F*ck.

A friend got a BUI Saturday night at the public ramp in Sandusky.
He said they were total pricks, Searched every nook and cranny looking for drugs. Then even hit him with a ticket for expired flares to.
I guess they were nailing a bunch of people headed in from the Barge party that day.
