The Lube Gets OK from Port Authority
The Vermilion Port Authority voted 4-0 on Thursday to allow the owner of the former Red Clay on the River building to sublease to the Quaker Steak & Lube restaurant company, Lube Holdings LLC.
The Port Authority owns McGarvey's Landing and leases land to the restaurant.
The board received letters of support from Main Street Vermilion, the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce, Buyers Fair/Cargo Jewelers and councilman John Gabriel.
Lube owners hope to be open by May. The interior will be redecorated in typical Quaker Steak & Lube unique motorsports-themed decor, combined with nautical decor.
Quaker Steak & Lube is a casual dining restaurant chain based in Sharon, Pennsylvania. The original restaurant was built in 1974 by George "Jig" Warren and Gary "Mo" Meszaros in an abandoned gas station in downtown Sharon, and decorated with license plates and old automobiles. Originally a "cook-your-own-steak" establishment – hence the steak in the restaurant's name – Quaker Steak's signature dish is now its chicken wings and the variety of sauces used to season them.
In addition to wings, the Lube (as it is often abbreviated) is known for the Lube Burger and Lube-N-Ade (a lemonade cocktail).
There are over 30 restaurants in the chain, with the majority operating in eastern Ohio and western and central Pennsylvania.
Quaker Steak & Lube features “All-You-Can-Eat Wings” every Tuesday and "world famous" Bike Nite every Wednesday. Kids eat free on Thursdays. The Lube also features car cruise-in events, family nights, live entertainment and more.
Quaker Steak & Lube claims a wide and highly loyal base of customers, a demographic that chain executives call “2 to 82”. On any given day, the restaurant will be visited by all demographics, including singles, couples, families, sports enthusiasts, seniors and the young without skewing heavily to any one group. The appeal, outside of the race cars, vintage cars and motorcycles, is the food.
The Lube also relies on event marketing to attract customers. On Bike Nite, for example, it’s typical for 1,000...2,000...even 3,000 bikers to pull into the parking lot of most any Quaker Steak & Lube location.
