A race in Port Clinton would be nice!

This Could Be the Start of Something Big
Wednesday, 04 February 2009 10:17 John Schaffner
Imagine, Labor Day Weekend in Port Clinton, Waterworks Park simply full of locals and visitors looking at exhibits, the Portage River Shoreline packed with 48’ Offshore Racing Power Boats, and a noise like you can’t believe coming from their exhausts. It could happen!
Local leaders heard on Monday about the potential of the Offshore Super Series (OSS) Powerboat Racing Association making Port Clinton, Ohio their home for a week as the central focus of what is being billed as Lake Erie Boat Week. The Event Coordinator, Janie Vogel, had been holding preliminary discussions with Larry Fletcher of the Ottawa County Visitor’s Bureau about the possibility of holding a portion of the event in Port Clinton. Up until last weekend, the bulk of the event was to have been hosted by Lyman Harbor in Sandusky. However, when they pulled out of consideration, the entire event now appears to have landed in Port Clinton.
The event is planned for September 2-6 and will consist of on and off-shore events surrounding the OSS Powerboat Race scheduled for Sunday, September 6. This event, yet to be named, will become part of the 2009 OSS National Schedule, which will include eight other events from Missouri to Alabama to Louisiana to the Florida Keys.
Aside from the OSS Race, the Lake Erie Boat Week event will consist of a Powerboat Regatta with on-water powerboat competitions, on-shore activities and parties, as well as the “Fastest Boat on Lake Erie competition planned for Thursday, September 3. Event Director, Janie Vogel, believes that this event alone will draw over 150,000 people to Ottawa County with an economic impact of better than $5-Million! Vogel indicates that the event should be complementary to the annual Green Island Sailboat Race hosted over Labor Day Weekend every year by Port Clinton Yacht Club.
One of the primary reasons Vogel asked the local community leaders to attend Monday’s meeting was the need for volunteer help and local logistical assistance. The only problem foreseeable, according to Vogel, would be the inability to gain the sponsorship critical to making an event like this happen. “We have a long way to go with the logistics of such a huge undertaking,” said Port Clinton Mayor Debbie Hymore-Tester on Tuesday afternoon. “Right now things are looking very positive, and we’re going to try to work with the organizers to make it happen.”
So, imagine, the biggest boating event on Lake Erie, maybe in the Great Lakes, focused on Port Clinton, Ohio. It could happen.

Had a looooong talk with Tim Rad*** the other day. Sounds like a hard sell from someone looking for a job, while that's o.k. with me this may sound better on paper. (not to be Mr negative;) ) I remember the offshore race in Sandusky in the mid 90's. Well I guess I don't remember too much other than it was all but impossible to see if you didn't have a boat and even then it was too far away.

I would love to see this come together I would be off the hook for Labor Day weekend:Bunny1:

That was my fault on here. I only read the website and assumed he was going to host this. I talked to him a day or two ago and he told me that Janie Vogel was passing out flyers at the boat show. He told her he would put it on his caledar on his website, and that he would like to be involved.

Don't bash just to bash........

Alright guys, in all honestly I'm getting tired of every single thread turning into a childish hijack fest. Most of us know each other well enough to know that few of us take life seriously, but some of this stuff just gets out of hand.

This site has always been funded 100% out of my pocket, I have thought numerous times about approaching some of our favorite island establishements and other north coast businesses with cheap advertising proposals to ease the cost of site operation. The only reason that I havent is becase I know most of theese would be advertisers would take one look at some of the stuff that gets posted on here and laugh in my face.

There are going to be a lot of people in the near future looking here for updates and info on this possible OSS race. I mean how cool would it be to have a sanctioned race in our own backyard? Theres lots of other fun threads that can be hijacked 7 ways from Sunday without cluttering the threads that contain valuable information. I'm not deleting any posts, or issuing any time outs but please start using a ounce or so of sense before hijacking a valuable thread.:cool1:

im sure you could get a pawn shop or bailbondsman to fork over some cash for an ad here...lol couldn`t help myself.
so on a positive note, i know for a fact now that the city of port clinton is 100% behind this. we will get to see p.c. as a destination not just as a parking lot during this thing. we have a downtown bar district on madison street with docks and fairgrounds adjacent at the old water works. with some teamwork i could see this thing turning into the northcoast pirates showdown or something cheesey like that. i think the casino would be an excellent venue for the shootout portion. kinda spread shit out like bike week does

Is Allen4 still a putz then?:)

Bman, where will the race be out of? I might have to trailer the boat up for the race if it is true. I think the PC/Sandusky is a great place for a race as long as the course is offshore.

Hi Everyone:

I am Janie Vogel, the Event Director for Lake Erie Boat Week, a new offshore powerboat racing event and boating festival taking place on Lake Erie this coming Labor Day week, 2009 (Sept. 1-6, 2009).

I'll be posting more news in the coming weeks on the event, but know that it is real and it's happening in Port Clinton, Ohio.

If you are interested in being a sponsor, boat volunteer, personal volunteer, or vendor, please contact me directly at racingpr@oh.rr.com.

Otherwise, I'm looking forward to forming a good line of communication with all of you in the coming year in order to make this the best boating event on Lake Erie ever! I'll be checking in often (or please feel free to contact me directly with your thoughts and ideas).

Thanks so much!

I'm all about this race happening but heres a thought. I'm all about doing whatever I can for promoting this sport but here we have a total stranger to offshore comming into our backyard promoting an event for proffit, and asking for the local knowledge to "volunteer".

Things that make ya go hmmmmm.

I agree Tony, but for anyone to pull off an event like this there will be volunteers.

I have some cousins that used to work the races on the Detroit river as volunteer divers.
