I am looking at a few handguns (XD, XDM, Mosquito, etc.). Thought you guys may have some insight.

Also....will be going to the range (hopefully this weekend) to rent and shoot each potential.

I hear a lot of rave with the XD. personally I dont have any experience with either. Is there a reason you are limiting yourself to just those two brands?

What do you intend to use it for?

No limitations at all, they are what have been advised to me thus far by a few co-workers.

Use will be multi-purpose. General target practice, potential league (never been in one, but have heard bullseye and bulling pin are fun) and self defense if needed.

I know that it would be much better to have a specific use in mind, but at this time I really don't. I have never been "into" guns before, but am intrigued lately. Thought I would pick one up and see how it goes :D

C'mon over into the darkside and buy an HK.;)

Now that winters comming Hopefully I have some time to get back into shooting. As I have said dozzens of times in the past go to a range that has a good rental dept. I think Blackwing may..not posotive though. Rent several makes, models, and calibers, then decide from there. Once you decide exactly what you want to buy let me know, you can find far cheaper deals on guns than the super sale price at the local gun shop, you just have to know where to look.

If your looking at a semi auto for your first all around handgun, I would look at the .40 S&W caliber with a full sized frame gun. It has plenty of power for self defense and pin shooting, but not enought to make reccoil unpleasant. A full sized frame on a .40 will have minimal muzzle jump which will greatly improve your accuracy as a beginner shooter, face it, shooting isnt any fun if you cant hit anything.:D

Glock, Sigarms, Springfield, Beretta all make nice handgun in the $500 ish range. HK, Kimber, and a few other customs run around the 1k range give or take a few hundred depending on model.

OK...couple more questions.

My co-worker is in the market for a couple of guns, do you guys have prices that would rival the local gun shop?

1) Wilson Combat CQB. He found it for around $2,300 new.
2) DPMS LR308

He is willing to buy new or used.

I bought an LR a few years back, absolute cheapest place I could find it was www.Rguns.net (http://www.Rguns.net) they can be ordered in almost any configuration imaginable, they dont have all the options listed on the site tell him to call to price the configuration he wants.

On the Wilson my best advise to him would be go to the 1911 forums and ask around.

The cool part about ordering from an online out of state retailer is generally you can find the absolute rock bottom cheapest prices on guns that your local shop would never dream of stocking and you get them in the exact configuration that you want them. When you start buying firearms over the $1k price range the up front savings plus the lack of sales tax (if out of state) is enough to buy A LOT! of ammo even after you factor in the shipping and transfer fee. Im usually the type of guy that likes to do business locally but after spending several thousands of dollars at local shops and barely getting as much as thank you let alone any sort of price break. Plus I didnt like the attitude that I got when I walked in and placed an order for an assault rifle instead of a high end shotgun. Fuking elitist hunters (waives middle finger).
