Hello G-dock mates. I am also sending this to Sea N America diary people as well, so you will get 2 notes.
Jill from the bakery called T at 6AM to see if our boat was ok, (oh sure it is, it's still on the hard!:).....@ L/side.
Peg & I drove over & spent about 2 hours talking with boaters that where there when it happened, & also the police, etc. (Something to be said, being a 'local'). Wow the video on the one persons phone was unreal! Flames high & wild.
As Vicki said, it started about 11 last night. Up on the bridge. People heard a pop & saw flames. The winds were blowing toward the gas dock, (This is N dock, on opposite the canal side). People that were at the other end of the dock were blocked by the flames/smoke so they could not walk off the dock, so they put on life jackets in case they had to jump in, but the C. Guard took them off at the water-end of the dock.
All 4 boats are on the hard, by the parking lot. I hope to get back for pictures. It is unreal how they melted. I still have 'smell of oil etc' in my throat & it was over 12 hrs ago. They have the yellow booms out in the water, & debris is floating of charred styrofoam & of course 'oil' looking stuff. Someone is in a little john boat, taking that out, & putting into bags. I understand at least 3 fire departments where there & no one can still understand WHY they did not blow up! Some one thought the flames were above the tanks, & the foam & water sprayed kept them cool enough. It's amazing that they did not blast apart. The wooden poles & some of the dock are burned as well.
1 boat is burned to the water line. The other I assume are totaled as well. 1 had it's lines burned & was floating loose.
Best Way (?) is charred on the star side, & I think some canvas melted. They were able to move the boat while all of this was happening. Its sitting at the gas dock, cleaning carpet, hosing soot down etc. They are to leave in sometime this month, for a trip to the Trent Severan. This trip was planned for a year. I feel so bad for the, but hopefully they will be able to go if all checks out on the boat.
Another boat, had canvas/glass melt & Sew Right was already there, replacing it.
I understand Toledo 13 news had some video on it at noon. Media is not allowed on the property from what I was told.
It's the talk of the town,as you can imagine.
They were 'lifiting' the last sunken boat out as we watched. Jake from Rescue Marine, was doing the work. Many divers, & lots of crew. They put a 'sling' under it, & slowly pumped the water out of it,& /air to it, & it came up fairly fast. Towed it via the "Thersea" & was in the B Pt sling as I left.
SO.......we all need to put fire detectors in our boats. As many people did not hear this at all.
In fact, one guy is a retired fireman for 40 years & slept thru the entire deal! & he was just across from the excitement. AC kept the noise out of them hearing this.
I have 'extra' carbon monoxide alarms on our boat, (not just the ones that are hard wired)....but did not think to have fire as well. Am picking them up this week.
Gregg the Chief of Police said how thankful they are that it did not happen over the 4th or even on the weekends, with people drinking & many on the dock. A few yrs ago, 3 died in a fire (6 yr old boy) up here in a boat fire so it brings back bad memories for many of the crew here. Thank you to the volunteer guys.
Will send more as I know.

Just from the way that was worded I would bet that the author is a ragbagger.....an aquaintance from 20 years ago retired to a sailboat and cruises around the Carribbean. For some reason she sends me weekly updates on her travels and writes exactly like that......only without all the freaking "quotation marks"

its really not the "talk of the town" and what good is a smoke alarm going to do on a boat if nobodys around to hear it. on the plus side i will keep my eyes open for some "drop in" big blocks for tim when im out there this mornig
