View Full Version : Hmmm it's boating, after all

Driving to work I noticed this old Carver flybridge sitting next to the road. Hmm. For Sale. Hmm. Maybe I will fling a few grand at the guy and see what happens. 20 knots will still get there. In the meantime I could use it as a cottage, and if the energy market falls out, I can start a yacht club/ trailer park.

There was a 28 carver for sale here a few years back. They just wanted to dump it. Great shape, no major rot, low time on engines. 5k The pirates on this board almost got together to make it a pirate ship.

My parents have had a Carver for at least 12 years or so and it's been a great boat. Very roomy.

This looks like about a 1979-1982ish Mariner 28. I don't know for sure... but that's what it looks like. Lots of side windows, not much aft deck, center companionway/salon door, flybridge deck for about 6.
I was going 35mph when I "inspected" it. I think I will go back and take a better look. Like in a half hour. :D

me and a buddy talked about buying one a few years back with zero intention of leaving the dock...we even teased about pulling the motor and putting a keg-erator in its place. :Pirate7:

If Ohio would stay warm longer, I would consider buying a big old bridge boat with aft cabin and live on it..... Cheap water front living!

After high school I seriously considered buying an old steel hulled Chris Craft Roamer and living on it. The family that dragged me into boating as a kid had a 1964 Roamer. Like a 35 or a 38. Cool boat.
I went down and looked at the Carver. It's a 1978 Voyager (Looks like a 28 foot).Twin 350s, V drives. Seems reasonably intact. Has canvas, and the canvas is on, which is a good sign. Not sure if it has a genset or not. They all need upholstery and teak work. Most need shaft seals repacked. It needs exhaust flappers on one side. My guess is that it needs batteries and all the usual suspects like fuel/water separators and hoses.
Asking 5 grand.

Rogue, I know you have mentioned that you considered it too.
In all seriousness, it is do-able in ohio, right?
What would you need and what are the pros/cons??
Obviously, a bubbler so you dont get froze in...
Filling freshwater and emptying holding tanks would suck in the winter...
Likely a generator... Dont trust dockside power when its -5 windchill...
What else?
ROGUE
06-12-2008, 08:21 PM
Yup on the generator (external ok) to run the bubbler in case the power goes out. Insulation for the walls, cold as hell in the winter. And most important, somewhere that would let you keep it and stay in it all winter, not so easy.

So... as I haven't bought any boats yet, and my big golf outing (for work) is over after next Monday the 23rd... I just want to offer my services as drunken ballast with a wallet beginning June 24th for anybody who needs comic relief, some reasonable back up in a bar fight, or someone else to pitch in. You can expect great jokes like that one, plus so many more that I can't type. I only weigh about 240. I only slow boats down when I stand up, so I promise to sit. I am an excellent wing man.
Interested parties please PM. :D
Otherwise I am going to take 5 grand out of the bank and approach every boat at every marina and offer them 5k until someone flips me keys.

My folks had and 28 Carver back when they were new. I remember going down the lake, riding on the bridge and leaning so bad I thought we were going to tip over. I guess that both engines pull of the same gas tank and the tanks are side by side. One full tank and one empty means a serious lean. :D:D

Now back to the boat thing. Fund, plan on a few Saturday and Sundays hoping around to every marina along the north coast. Walk around for a while in each one and listen for the guy who is screaming and cussing, also listen for the sound of tools being thrown. Walk up with a fist full of hundreds and buy a boat.
Seccond scenario: Do the same thing at a few crowded launch ramps and wait for the divorce triggering fight between husband and wife with the boat of your choice (this is bound to happen on an hourly basis at any given ramp on a nice day). After the smoke clears walk up to the wife with a fist full of hundreds and buy a boat.

Why Lord? Why that one thing on my first thread here? :D
Back to the boating thing: saw a very well preserved Formula 242 over toward cleveland for about 10k. One owner, always inside.
No UV fading even.
My fear on the Carver with inboards is that after being inside for a few years, the shaft seals will be shrunken and take a long soak to reseal. (If they ever do) Having a "wet basement" would be kind of freaky. I am assuming that they are the rope type and not dripless.

I have been working my rear off since Sunday. Now that I am done I am in the hunt. Checked out the formula that rebar has. Haven't contacted him yet.
This may be better for me if it is still around, and Ohio to Ohio transportation is better. One of my yacht club sponsors had a 1979 30 foot sundancer with an 11 foot or so beam. It had a huge aft deck and was a decent express cruiser. I remember one time driving it from Monroe to Toledo because he was too Clamdiggered to drive. Was a good riding boat. Heavy.
I'll call Rob later and check.
