I have my own illegal non NEC way of doing it....
In our panel I have a 50 Amp double pole breaker that is normally OFF.
I have #6 SO cord connected to the breaker (of course, also the neutral bar and ground buss)that leads a very short distance outside to a box that has a mounted and shielded 40 amp male plug (sold for generator connetions but I cannot think of the right name at the moment.
For our genset I have a 10' length of SO cord w/ a male plug to fit the 220 outlet on genset and a femal plug to fit male plug in box.
To use:
Turn off power to panel at Main Disconnect located on side of house.
Plug genset into generator connection.
Fire up genset.
Flip 50 amp breaker to ON.
Good to go.
No backfeed into transmission lines and my panel is hot w/ 220, takes maybe 3 minutes.
