Yeah Yeah I know the grilling and deep frying techniques. Today I made soup. Wendy is a great cook but has to measure everything. The ingediants have to be just right.

I went to the freezer and cleaned out everthing that looked old or I may want in my soup. Chicken, carrots, celery, peas, corrots, tomatoes, onions...... I made two types Italian sytle and more traditional style. Spices according to MY taste.

Made differnt pasta, rice to give choices.

I must say it came out really good. Kids even ate it and they normally refuse soup unless it's out of a can with stars.

I guess since I lived with my dad from the time I was 10 I developed a non-manly skill....Cooking.

I was basically raised by Wolves (Actually I would have been better off if I litterally was) so I learned to cook at an early age.
In no way do I claim to have great culinary skills, but I certainkly can open the pantry and come upwith a good meal based on ingredients on hand.
Even MrsBomar and BajaPower say my from scratch Potato Soup is the best they have ever had.

Men who can cook use what's on hand. It's a skill:Rules:

My dad is probably the best cook I know and he almost never uses recipes. He either has it memorized or just grabs whatever is available. For some of his recipes, I stand beside him and measure out what his handful of celery or whatever is so that I have a starting point to recreate what he makes.

Yo Bob, do you by chance have a decent recipe for making EASY gravy?

bajalion
11-24-2006, 02:10 PM
Gravy itself is easy. Take meat drippings add some water, put on stove till light boil, stir in some flour, salt pepper. NOTE slowly add the flour. It will gel over time If it is too soupy add more flour.

Sounds good!

What if I was only having rice though? :)

Now me, I take the pan scrapings and drippings, turn the burner to high, and stir in flour to make a roux (learned that word from the Galloping Gormet).
Stir and scrape skillet like hell as mixture thickens and gets the consistency of pancake batter. Salt and pepper the bejesus out of it as it cooks. Roux will begin to brown.
Immediately add whole milk and stir like hell. Gravy will start to thicken.....you want to make it pretty runny as it will thicken a lot as it cools.
A few lumps are fine, give it that authentic look.

There sure is something odd about going to a website called ISLAND PIRATES looking for a gravy recipe!

Thank you gentlemen! :D
