My bilge needs repainted pretty bad and since my engines are out...what better chance right?
Heres my dilema, the bilte needs re rigged bad wiring and rigging is a total mess and has been since I bought the thing back in 01.
Im kicking around the idea of stripping EVERYTHING and starting over. To repaint the bilge properly it needs done anyway. The SSM inner transom plates cover almost the entire inside of the transom, thinking of taking them off, the gimbles off, exhaust tips off, steering assembly off and going full hyd, trim pumps off EVERYTHING replacing the gimble bearings and resealing the transom.
Am I crazy for even thinking of tackeling this project or should I live with the half ass rigging and wiring job that I already have and paint around everything and throw it back together in a hurry??

Easier to do all of that now while you can get to it.
Why hurry, we are 5-6 mos away from summer anyway.

Thats alot of work and sometimes you open a can of worms by doing that much,BUT it would be nice to do it right while it is apart, its not like you use the boat anyway!!!
Just strip the whole thing and paint it all!! you can fix that little itty bitty crack by the windshield area:D

Go for it. Then I won't have to hear you complain when something isn't wired right. Or I can tell you it's your own fault :D
Besides, you have the time and it isn't like you're boatless if you don't get it done by may ;)

:D If you plan on keeping it awhile, Id say go for it. For christs sake its a 28' Cigarette, you dont need anything else for awhile. It serves its purpose as a weekend island home, and a frequent poker runner. Hell, maybe I'll even introduce you to Drainplug this winter, he's getting pretty good at rigging boats! Since Im always on his ass to make them look better!

We went through the same thing last year when re-rigging my brothers formula. It's nice when everuthing is brand new and looks clean again.
It only took about a day to strip everything out of the bilge. (we won't talk about how long it took to put it back)
We cleaned and de-greased the bilge with puple power, sanded, and recleaned with laquer thinner.
We painted it with a Sherwin Williams product called Tile-clad. It is a 2-part epoxy based paint that quite a few of us have used down here in boat bilges with good success. It is exspensive but not near as bad as Bilge coat or Awl-grip or the sort.
We used a local hardware supplier for all the stainless hardware such as screws, cushion clamps, etc.
Very rewarding in the end but I never thought it would take as long as it did. As you know with boats when you need something you forgot about it is very rareily found at a store near you.:D

but where will all the little creatures in you bilge hide once you get it all cleaned out? You not going to clean up the trim hoses, hydraulic lines ect on your transome are you? How would we identify your boat and then what could Bajalion make fun of you about?
Go for it you have all kinds of spare time with that house and all...

I had my bildge redone and I'm really happy about it. I had to do this due to my stringer recontruction but the work was the same. If the wiring is a mess then you have a great opportunity to do it right. You may open a can of worms but only in the fact that you'll uncover potential problems on land versus finding them on water.:Boating21:

You see a lot of the bilge if someone closes you in there for an hour or so to see where a motor lid is hanging up. Not to say anyones name out loud :D

Gut it and do the entire thing. We repainted ours when we had everything out of it 3 winters ago. It was worth having everything out to redo the bilge.
